What Happens Before the Canvas

People sometimes ask what a working day looks like, expecting an answer about paint. Most days start somewhere else — a line written in a notebook, an object turned over on the table, a walk with no clear destination.

By the time paint actually reaches canvas, the difficult decisions are usually already made. What's left is closer to execution than invention.
